St. Bernadette School Library Information Centre The mission statement of the St. Bernadette School Library Centre is to support classroom teachers in their endeavour to implement the Ontario Curriculum, to promote a love of literature in all its forms,
and to provide our students and teachers with equitable and open access to information. Our Library will be a welcoming and stimulating learning environment where students are enabled to become independent, lifelong learners.

Library Technicians assist in the organization and maintenance of the school’s collection of library materials using a specialized knowledge of library systems and methods to ensure an effective and efficient library operation for the use of students and staff. |
Information Literacy Information Literacy is the key to helping students use learning throughout their lives as a way to solve problems, act ethically, plan for the future and prepare for change. |

Information Technology Information technology is the study or application of systems. Students use information technology to relate prior knowledge, locate information, synthesize findings, formulate conclusions and transfer knowledge and skills. |

We have a wonderful and varied selection of books which interest readers of all ages. All materials in the library are organized into different sections. Each book in the library has a call number which is printed on a spine label and placed on the spine of a book. The call number provides information about where the book can be located in the library.

Picture Books
Juvenile picture books can be shared by children and adults of all ages. An JP on the label indicates that the book is a Juvenile picture book and is located in the Picture Book section of the library. These books are shelved in alphabetical order according to the author's last name.
Example: The Very Hungry Caterpillar written by Eric Carle has the following call number:
JP CAR (First 3 letters of the author's last name)

Easy Reader Books
We have placed beginning reading books in the Easy Reader section of the library. |

Fiction Section
Fic on the spine of a book indicates that the book is a fiction and they are novels. We have both hard cover and paperback novels in the library. Fiction stories are imaginary stories. They could also take place in a real setting and include some historical figures.
Fiction books are arranged by alphabetical order according to the author's last name.
Example: Run by Eric Walters has the following call number:

Non-Fiction Section
Non-fiction books are books that contain true information or facts. They are organized by Dewey Decimal System. It is a system used to classify and shelve books in the library according to 10 basic categories. Reference Materials Section
We have a variety of reference materials which students can use in the library. These materials remain in the library so that they can be used by everyone during the school day.
Reference Materials include:
